Well, we may- or may not- be on the trail tomorrow! We have gotten some conflicting infor-mation regarding the possibility of procuring permits to start on the 1st. Our current plan involves a) getting to the permit office at 4:30 AM to get a "walk up permit" to begin Sunday the 2nd; b) coming back around 10:15 to see if they have released any of the prior reserved permits for the first, and if so, hit the trail. We are currently camping at Upper Pines campground (near Curry Village). It was pretty lucky we got a spot- the Yosemite fires created some last minute openings.
We drove up the 395 from LA and dropped off my car at Whitney Portal earlier today. It was pretty crazy to then drive the entirety of what we will be walking in 20 days! Some thoughts while viewing the intense granite crags that make up the eastern Sierra: I am going to need to PILE on the sunscreen. Also, it's going to be scary. I definitely got anxious looking at how tall and steep it looked...[Lucy]
